About Form N-400 — Application for Naturalization
Form N-400 (Application for Naturalization) is the official USCIS form used to apply for U.S. citizenship. To be eligible, you generally must: have been a lawful permanent resident for 5 years (or 3 years if married to and living with a U.S. citizen), demonstrate continuous residence and physical presence, be able to read, write, and speak English, pass a civics test covering U.S. history and government, and be a person of good moral character. After filing N-400, USCIS schedules a biometrics appointment, an English and civics interview/test, and — if approved — a naturalization oath ceremony. The current filing fee is $640 (plus $85 biometrics for most applicants).
