About Form I-765 — Application for Employment Authorization
Form I-765 is used to apply for an Employment Authorization Document (EAD), commonly called a work permit, which allows eligible noncitizens to work legally in the United States. Common applicants include adjustment of status applicants (I-485 filers), asylees and asylum applicants, DACA recipients, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders, and certain visa holders. The eligibility category code from Form I-765 determines which applicants qualify and for how long. EADs are typically issued for 1–2 years and can be renewed. Filing I-765 concurrently with I-485 is generally included in the same filing fee package.
