Form I-131 is used to request several types of travel documents: a re-entry permit (for permanent residents planning to be absent from the US for more than 1 year), a refugee travel document (for asylees and refugees), an advance parole document (for those with pending adjustment of status applications who need to travel before their green card is approved), and certain other travel authorizations. Traveling outside the US while an I-485 is pending without first obtaining advance parole will generally result in abandonment of the application. Re-entry permits must be applied for while the applicant is in the United States.
