About Form I-539 — Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status
Form I-539 allows certain nonimmigrants to apply to extend their authorized stay in the United States or change to a different nonimmigrant visa category without departing and obtaining a new visa abroad. Common uses include extending a tourist or student visa stay, changing from B-2 visitor to F-1 student status, or extending O, P, or other visa categories. The application must be filed before your current authorized stay expires. Approval is not guaranteed. While your I-539 is pending, you are generally considered to be maintaining lawful status if you filed timely. Dependents of principal visa holders are often included on a single I-539.
