About Form W-4 — Employee's Withholding Certificate
Form W-4 is completed by every new employee and submitted to their employer before the first paycheck. It instructs the employer's payroll system on how much federal income tax to withhold, based on your filing status, number of dependents, additional income sources, and any extra withholding amount you request. The W-4 was redesigned in 2020 and no longer uses personal allowances. Employees can submit a new W-4 at any time during the year if their financial situation changes — marriage, divorce, new child, or a second job all typically warrant updating this form.
