About Form 1099-NEC — Nonemployee Compensation
Form 1099-NEC (Nonemployee Compensation) was reintroduced by the IRS starting with tax year 2020 to separately report payments of $600 or more to non-employees, replacing Box 7 of the old Form 1099-MISC. Businesses must send 1099-NEC forms to each contractor or freelancer they paid during the year by January 31. Recipients use the 1099-NEC to report self-employment income on Schedule C of their Form 1040 and calculate self-employment tax on Schedule SE. There is no federal income tax withheld on 1099-NEC income — recipients are responsible for making quarterly estimated tax payments.
