About Form W-7 — IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) Application
Form W-7 is used to apply for or renew an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) — a 9-digit number issued by the IRS to individuals who need a U.S. taxpayer identification number but are not eligible for a Social Security Number. ITINs are issued to nonresident and resident aliens, their spouses, and dependents who have U.S. tax reporting requirements. A completed federal tax return must be attached to Form W-7 unless you qualify for an exception. Applications can be submitted by mail, in person at an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center, or through an IRS-authorized Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA).
