About Form W-2 — Wage and Tax Statement
Form W-2 is issued by employers to each employee by January 31 each year and reports the employee's total wages, tips, and other compensation paid during the previous tax year, along with all federal, state, and local taxes withheld. You receive multiple copies: one to attach to your state return, one for your records, and the key copy needed to file your federal return. Employers also file Copy A with the Social Security Administration. If you do not receive your W-2 by mid-February, contact your employer first, then the IRS if necessary. The IRS can issue a substitute W-2 (Form 4852) as a last resort.
