About Form 2553 — Election by a Small Business Corporation
Form 2553 is filed by eligible domestic corporations (or LLCs electing corporate tax treatment) to be treated as an S corporation for federal income tax purposes. S corporation status allows income, losses, deductions, and credits to pass through to shareholders and be taxed at the individual level, avoiding the double taxation of C corporations. To be effective for the current tax year, Form 2553 must generally be filed by March 15 (for calendar-year corporations) or no later than 2 months and 15 days after the start of the tax year. All shareholders must consent to the election by signing the form. The IRS will send a notification letter confirming the election.
