Bill of Sale Template

A bill of sale is the legal document that formalizes the transfer of ownership of personal property from a seller to a buyer. It serves as proof of the transaction and protects both parties by documenting what was sold, for how much, and under what conditions.

This general bill of sale template can be used for a wide range of transactions: vehicle sales (cars, motorcycles, boats), personal property (electronics, furniture, equipment), business asset sales, and livestock. The template captures all the information needed to establish a clear chain of title: full descriptions of the property being sold, the agreed sale price, the date of transfer, any warranties or "as is" disclosures, and the signatures of both buyer and seller.

For vehicle sales in particular, this bill of sale records the VIN, mileage, and odometer certification — information required by most state DMVs to transfer vehicle registration. The "as is" disclosure section is particularly important for private party sales, clearly establishing that the buyer accepts the property in its current condition.

This template also includes an optional notarization block for transactions where notarization is required or desired for additional legal protection.
